How safe is YOUR headcollar?

We all know that accidents can happen, no matter what you’re doing with your horse. Headcollars are a piece of equipment that we all use in our day to day routine with our horses, so we were surprised to find that there was little to no research available on the safety around headcollars. We approached Dr David Marlin and started conducting research to find out horse owners experience with using headcollars, asking 5615 participants about how often they used them and any problems associated with them.

The results were surprising…

  • Almost 1 out of 3 people experienced a horse being injured as a result of a headcollar.
  • More than 1 in 7 people have been injured in a headcollar related incident.
  • There were 167 horse fatalities as a result of a headcollar.

It is also likely most of us can think of a time where a horse has pulled back and they haven’t broken free but have panicked and put a considerable amount of force against their poll, their neck and their back.

How Safe is Your Horse's Headcollar?

Headcollars are one of the most used pieces of horse equipment. In fact, 88% of owners use a horse headcollar every day*. As riders, we have safety equipment to protect ourselves, such as boots, hats, and body protectors. This is obviously to prevent injury or the severity of injury in the event of an accident. But is there a need for our horse headcollars to be safe too? We designed our Stellar Headcollar after researching headcollar accidents, read on to find out what we found.
