  • Massage Pad Testing

The Equilibrium Massage Pad was independently tested by Myerscough College and the findings showed:

    Increased Flexibility
Results showed an overall improvement in back flexibility of approximately 46%.

    Stride Length
The stride length of the treated horses increased over the period of the test by 12cms, whereas the control group showed little improvement.

    Promoting Relaxation
Using a heart rate monitor, horses wearing the Equilibrium Massage Pad showed a decrease in heart rate when compared to the horses in the control group.

  • Choosing your Hotspot's Settings

LOW – for a relaxing massage after exercise, on a day off and when introducing it for the first time.

MEDIUM – for general maintenance and everyday use as a warm up aid.

HIGH – for horses who prefer a more intense massage or those with thicker coats or are overweight.

Use cyclical massage if you are holding the Hotspot still to target a specific area.
Use continuous massage if you are moving the Hotspot over larger areas. This allows each sweep to deliver the same massage.
Use the heat on its own for a gentle session to increase circulation. Ideal for sensitive horses and perfect prior to stretching your horse.

For the ultimate session, use heat and massage together! This is best suited when holding the Hotspot in one area or sweeping it over a smaller area.

  • Benefits of Massage

Massage and heat are two simple ways in which we can help support healthy muscle function in our hardworking horses.

    Massage.
Performance depends on freedom of movement, full flexibility and an absence of musculoskeletal pain, all of which can be improved using massage (Gellman, 1998). These factors also contribute towards keeping your horse comfortable and happy in general too!

    Benefits of Massage include:

    • Maintain healthy blood and lymph circulation.
    • Soothes tired muscles.
    • Supports recovery after exercise.
    • Promotes relaxation.
  • Benefits of Heat

Using heat is a great way to help sensitive horses who may find massage too much. Heat is non-invasive, gentle and well accepted with many associated benefits.

Research suggests that tissue temperature needs to increase by at least 3 to 5°C from the resting temperature (Bockstahler et al, 2004). However using something that is too hot could cause discomfort and even damage to the tissue.

FAQ's

The heat setting will heat up to 42 degrees Celsius and will cut off at 45 degrees Celsius.

There is some tolerance around the target temperature but it will be within a few degrees of 42. There is an internal cut off set at 50 to protect the electrical components, by the time it has got through all the layers of the mitt the surface heat is around 45.

Yes you can however if the horse is wet from being warm/sweating we would not recommend adding the heat.

Do not use on the following (for humans and horses):

  • Open wounds, new injuries, or new swelling (for the first 48 hours).
  • Where there is suspected infection or malignant tumours.
  • Burn injuries or deep vein thrombosis.
  • Over the abdomen if pregnant.
  • Circulatory problems, causing hypo or hyper sensitivity to heat.
  • Active bleeding, bruising or haematoma.
  • Bony areas such as the wither, point of shoulder or hip.

Store the Massage Pad, Mitt Hotspot or Mitt somewhere dry and safe inside the bag it comes with. Avoid extreme temperatures to prevent damage to the battery and disconnect the battery. Please ensure the product is clean and dry before storage.

The Massage Pad, Mitt Hotspot and Massage Mitt were developed to provide a superficial (surface) massage to maintain the horses’ well being. This was proven in our tests by showing an increase in back flexibility and overall relaxation. The Massage Pad was not developed to replace the manual techniques of a qualified physiotherapist or massage therapist. Only a trained professional should carry out a massage to your horse that is able to reach the deeper muscles.

Replacement batteries and chargers for the Equilibrium Massage Pad, Mitt Hotspot and Massage Mitt can be ordered & purchased directly from our website. Please note these will not fit the older Navy Mitt, if you have one of these please contact us for help.

Yes, you can use the massage setting on the Massage Pad/Heatsense and/or Massage Mitt/Hotspot up to 3 times a day. Especially at a competition you may wish to use it before you ride as a warm up and in-between phases or rounds. However, we recommend not using the heat setting on the Heatsense for more than one cycle, or the Hotspot for more than two consecutive cycles.

Heat and Massage for Horse Riders

We look into the benefits of massage for horse riders, used alongside heat, to target the four main areas horse riders tend to commonly suffer with Hannah Donnelly, Chartered Physiotherapist BSc (Hons).

The Benefits of Heat for Your Horse

Some horses, if in discomfort or particularly sensitive, may find massage over stimulating. Using heat on its own is a great tool in these conditions as it is very non invasive, and is usually accepted well by even the most sensitive of souls. Heat should be concentrated on a small area for best effect. For other horses, its a great tool either on its own or combined with massage that reaps several benefits.
