  • Benefits of Heat for Animals

Using heat is a great way to support sensitive animals who may find massage or hands-on therapy too much. Heat is non-invasive, gentle, and often well accepted, with many associated benefits.

Research suggests that tissue temperature needs to increase by at least 3 to 5°C from resting temperature to achieve a therapeutic effect (Bockstahler et al., 2004). However, using something too hot could cause discomfort and may even damage the tissue, so heat should always be applied carefully and monitored throughout.

  • Benefits of Massage for Animals

Massage and heat are two simple ways we can help support healthy muscle function in hardworking animals.

    Massage

Performance and general wellbeing depend on freedom of movement, flexibility, and comfort within the musculoskeletal system, all of which may be supported through massage (Gellman, 1998). These factors can also contribute towards keeping animals comfortable, relaxed, and happy in everyday life too.

    Benefits of massage include:

    • Maintain healthy blood and lymph circulation.
    • Soothes tired muscles.
    • Supports recovery after exercise.
    • Promotes relaxation.

FAQ's

Horse - Start with the Hotdot switched off and allow your horse to sniff it. Then stroke it over the body as you would when grooming. Once your horse seems comfortable, turn the massage setting on low and continue sweeping it over the body before trying higher settings or targeted use.

Dog or pet - Begin with the Hotdot switched off and let your pet sniff it. Then gently stroke areas they already enjoy being touched. Next, turn the massage on low while holding it slightly away so they can hear the vibration. You can then place it over your hand first, so your pet feels a softer vibration, before using it directly.

The Hotdot has three massage intensities:

Low is best for introductions, cool-downs and sensitive animals.

Medium is the everyday setting for general maintenance and pre-exercise use.

High is for animals that prefer a stronger massage, have a thick coat, or are slightly overweight. For dogs, high is usually only needed for large or giant breeds.

The Hotdot also has a heat option. Heat and massage can be used together for a deeper session. Heat alone can also be useful for sensitive animals or those that may find massage overstimulating. The Hotdot is designed to reach a therapeutic heat of 42°C on the surface. It has been tested to stay below 45°C during the 10-minute treatment period.

Each session runs for 10 minutes and then turns off automatically, alternatively a long press of the massage button with stop the massage at any point.

Do not apply more than 2 consecutive cycles of heat in one spot.

Either!

For targeted areas, hold the Hotdot in place for 5–10 minutes.

For an all-over massage move slowly in sweeping motions over the main muscle groups, following the direction of the hair. Spend around 2 minutes on each muscle group and repeat on both sides.

Do not use it on open wounds, new injuries, over the abdomen of any pregnant animal or human, new swelling within the first 48 hours, suspected infections or malignant tumours. Avoid concentrating massage over bony areas such as the wither, point of shoulder and point of hip.

Heat and Massage for Horse Riders

We look into the benefits of massage for horse riders, used alongside heat, to target the four main areas horse riders tend to commonly suffer with Hannah Donnelly, Chartered Physiotherapist BSc (Hons).

The Benefits of Heat for Your Horse

Some horses, if in discomfort or particularly sensitive, may find massage over stimulating. Using heat on its own is a great tool in these conditions as it is very non invasive, and is usually accepted well by even the most sensitive of souls. Heat should be concentrated on a small area for best effect. For other horses, its a great tool either on its own or combined with massage that reaps several benefits.
