  • Massage Pad Testing

The Equilibrium Massage Pad was independently tested by Myerscough College and the findings showed:

    Increased Flexibility
Results showed an overall improvement in back flexibility of approximately 46%.

    Stride Length
The stride length of the treated horses increased over the period of the test by 12cms, whereas the control group showed little improvement.

    Promoting Relaxation
Using a heart rate monitor, horses wearing the Equilibrium Massage Pad showed a decrease in heart rate when compared to the horses in the control group.

  • Heat Technology

Heat is a non-invasive, gentle, and generally a well-accepted form of therapy with many associated benefits. However, it is important that heat is delivered at the correct temperature, and for an appropriate amount of time to achieve the desired effects.

If temperatures are not high enough, there is unlikely to be any significant effect to the tissue. If temperatures are too high, or are left in position too long, then tissue damage may occur.

Our Heatsense Pad has therefore been thoroughly tested to ensure the heat is delivered in accordance with supporting research. A range of sources determined the following necessities for the Massage Pad Heatsense.
    - Heat is delivered between 40-45 degrees Celsius.
    - The target temperature is maintained for 15 minutes.
    - The heat should never exceed 45 degrees Celsius for an extended period of time.

  • Heat Sensor Technology

Due to the risks associated with heat, and the narrow target window for therapeutic heat, we developed an intelligent monitoring system that is constantly checking the temperature being delivered to the horse. This adjusts accordingly to ensure a repeatable session is experienced each time the pad is used.

This is especially important in a product that is strapped to the horse, that they cannot easily move away from.

As the temperature reaches the target of 42 degrees Celsius power to the heat pads will cut out. As the temperature drops again, power to the heat pads will resume. This process continues to ensure the horse receives 15 minutes at the target temperature.

This monitoring system will also help prevent the pad heating tissue that is already hot, whether that is due to ambient temperatures, or if the horse has just been exercised. The left and right side of the pad also work independently of each other, meaning one side could be receiving heat, even if the other is too warm.

FAQ's

Yes, you can use it up to 3 times a day. Especially at a competition, you may wish to use it before you ride as a warm up and in-between phases or rounds. We would advise not running more than one session of heat consecutively on the same horse.

We do not advise travelling in the Massage Pad Heatsense for 2 reasons. The first is that if a horse leans on the pad against the partition this could damage the product. Secondly, to get the most benefit out of a session the horse needs to be stood at rest.

The Massage Pad Heatsense uses the same massage technology from our original Massage Pad. In our clinical trial the Massage Pad was used 6 days a week. Using it this frequently significantly increased back flexibility and relaxation. Therefore, we recommend using it at least this often to see the maximum benefits.

You can use it either before or after exercise, or both! Use before exercise as a warm up, or after exercise to aid recovery. Especially if you have worked your horse harder than usual. If using after exercise make sure the horse has completed the initial stages of recovery (i.e. their heart rate and temperature is back to normal).

You can use the Massage Pad Heatsense over a thin fleece rug to help keep your horse warm during their massage session. Alternatively, you can place a rug over the pad too if you prefer, this method is better suited if you are using the heat function so the pad is in direct contact with your horse's back.

Yes. Try to get all excess water off your horse by using a sweat scraper and/or towel drying, and then use the pad over a thin towel. We would not recommend using the heat function directly against your horse’s back if their coat is wet. If the Massage Pad Heatsense gets damp, ensure it is thoroughly dried before being stored away ready for the next use.

No, it is important that you only charge your Equilibrium Batteries with their specifically allocated chargers.

Yes, this is telling you that the maximum heat temperature has been reached and therefore the light will go out. As the temperature drops again the light may come back on, indicating the pad is heating again. You may also notice towards the end of the 30 minute total pad run time the red light has gone out completely, if your battery has ample charge then this is simply because your horse has received the correct target temperature for at least 15 minutes.

The Benefits of Heat for Your Horse

Some horses, if in discomfort or particularly sensitive, may find massage over stimulating. Using heat on its own is a great tool in these conditions as it is very non invasive, and is usually accepted well by even the most sensitive of souls. Heat should be concentrated on a small area for best effect. For other horses, its a great tool either on its own or combined with massage that reaps several benefits.
