Water Resistant

  • Waterproof Testing

Waterproofing is essential for keeping horses dry and comfortable, especially during prolonged turnout. The Endure Turnout Rug is made with a 1680D Oxford outer that has been independently tested by Intertek to a waterproof rating of 8,000mm — a level designed to withstand heavy and sustained rain. This means the rug can resist water pressure equivalent to an 8-metre column of water before leaking, ensuring reliable protection in all weather conditions. It's the peace of mind you need, rain or shine

  • Denier and why it's important

When it comes to rugs, denier refers to the thickness and strength of the fibres used in the outer fabric — and the higher the number, the tougher the material. The Endure Turnout Rug & Field Relief Waterproof Fly Rug use a 1680D outer, making it one of the most durable options on the market. This high denier count means the rug is better equipped to resist rips, tears, and wear from rolling, biting, or rugged turnout conditions.

  • Print Testing to Deter Flies from Landing

Researchers around the world have been curious as to why flies do not cause zebras as much distress as other animals. There are several theories for this including light polarisation, pattern contrast, pattern size and aliasing (misidentified visual signals that affect landing).

Research carried out by professors from the University of Bristol in 2020 showed that certain patterns, such as black and white checkered rugs had fewer horse fly landings compared to a plain grey rug. This research was expanded on and in 2023 an article was published that supported the hypothesis that checkerboard black and white patterns had significantly fewer landings than uniform grey material.

Inspiration behind the product

The Story

Spring, summer and early autumn often bring challenging conditions for horses and owners alike: sunshine followed by sudden showers, paired with relentless flies in between. Traditional fly rugs offer excellent insect protection but can’t protect against those unexpected showers. Lightweight turnout rugs cope with rain, but can be too warm and don’t prevent fly irritation.
The Field Relief Waterproof Fly Rug was developed to bridge that gap. By combining a robust waterproof upper with our proven mesh designed to reduce fly landings, this rug delivers comfort, protection and practicality in one thoughtful design - resulting in a rug your horse can stay comfortable in all day – whatever the weather decides to do.

FAQ's

The upper section of the rug is waterproof and designed to withstand rain showers (the material is the same as our Endure Turnout Rug, tested to withstand 8000mm. The lower section is breathable fly mesh to keep your horse cool while protecting against insects.

We wouldn’t recommend using this rug on hot summers days, however the combination of a waterproof top and breathable mesh makes this rug cooler than a lightweight turnout, ideal for warmer, showery days that we tend to see in Spring and Autumn.

Yes, it includes a separate neck cover featuring waterproof fabric and breathable mesh for balanced protection.
